Who We Are
The nursery is run by Toby and his wife, Lisa Buckland. Lisa is a qualified horticulturist, trained at Hadlow College and Cambridge University Botanic Garden - and freelance writer for magazines including Amateur Gardening, Coast and Country Living. They are ably assisted by Tom Lane, the new apprentice and Richard Sime, who is great on the tools!
Where We Are
The nursery is located in the Walled Garden of Powderham Castle in the small village of Kenton in East Devon. Because we are an online nursery selling plants by post, we aren't open to the public. However, Powderham Castle and the area of the Walled Garden which houses the Pet Centre and Play Area is open annually from spring to autumn.
We share the Walled Garden, once the kitchen garden to the estate, with the Pet Centre and Play Area, which is run by Maria who tends an array of goats, pot-bellied pigs, chickens, ponies, sheep, a donkey and some very noisy geese to name but a few. There is also a zip wire and wooden play fort which is great for children - certainly our own kids have a whale of time there!
The Walled Garden is also home to a 50m lean-to Victorian greenhouse that from April 2012 is open to the public and which we are slowly bringing back to life. So far, it has produced a wonderful array of chilli peppers, lemon grass and tomatoes, along with housing a couple of banana plants (Musa basjoo) and a giant pumpkin, known to all as Priscilla.
Though the nursery isn't open on a day-to-day basis, we will be running occasional events and talks there.
