Toby Says

Bronze fennel is the herb I use the most as an ornamental plant in the border, thanks to its nice vase shape and bronze foxtail-foliage. On the nursery, I dot them among the stock beds to bring in hoverflies and their aphid-eating larvae.

Details

A tall but see-through perennial herb with delicate bronze foliage, topped with umbels of lemon-coloured flowers in summer. It's ideal for adding fast height to flower borders though you can keep it smaller by regularly picking the aniseed-flavoured foliage for cooking - we wrap it around mackerel and cook it on summer barbecues. Picking it will reduce the amount of flowers which helps to keep its generous self-sowing in check.
